It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Legendary Comics, the funnybook spin-off unit of Legendary Entertainment, but they’ve been spnning out some good looking books, as you can see from their homepage. They’re also not shy about putting out full-length original graphic novels, eschewing the periodical serialization model.

And here’s a new one by Mark Waid, Ed Benes and Dinei Ribeiro called AXIOM, which just dropped this week. As with a lot of Waid’s recent superhero work outside Marvel, (Irredeemable, etc), it’s a look at what happens when things go wrong. In this case, a supposed savior from space (sound familiar?) turns out to be as much of a problem as a hero. The cover gives you an idea that things are not going to go too well here. .

Here’s the official description:

Axiom and Thena, aliens from another world, arrive on earth and exhibit extraordinary powers. Benevolent and godlike, they cure humanity’s ills and usher in an era of peace, prosperity and complacency.

A series of tragic events reveals another side of Axiom: humanity’s savior becomes its worst nightmare. A Defense Department analyst, armed with only scientific knowledge and courageous spirit takes on the turned hero in a fight for mankind’s survival!

Writer: Mark Waid
Penciler: Ed Benes
Colorist: Dinei Ribeiro

Price: $19.99
144 Pages
ISBN: 978-1937278731

It’s available in fine comics shops, book stores and Comixology. Here’s a few pages; if superheroes are your thing, this is a sharp looking book. axiom-001-196293.jpg

  1. Um, isn’t this literally the exact same set-up as Irredeemable? Except, I suppose, with a “defense department analyst armed with only scientific knowledge and courageous spirit” as our hero? Oh, joy. This doesn’t sound like a cynical movie pitch disguised as a super derivative comic at all.

And what’s up with that splash page and the coffee cup on the billboard placed strategically behind Thena’s right breast? Who thought that was a good idea?

Can you clarify why this is a bad idea? I never noticed the cup until you brought it up.

Just thought it was a goofy composition decision, artistically speaking. Especially because it emphasizes the T & A aspect of her character design, her breasts being way out of proportion with her waist, etc.
